Speed Racer: The Videogame Review

This is a great complement to Mario Kart. In my opinion, these are 2 best racing games for the Wii. Where Mario Kart is cartoonish fun, Speed Racer is intense and addictive.br /br /As some other reviewers have noted, the driving feel isn’t very realistic, but then I’ve never driven the Mach 6 in real life, so who knows?? The cars handle horribly at low speeds (below 200mph) and so if you get car-fu’d, it can sometimes be hard to get going again until everyone else blows by you. And you definitely don’t want to come to rest inside a barrel roll – you flop onto your back and explode. At high speeds, though, you really feel like you’re driving a rocket, and it definitely gets the ol’ heart pounding. And there’s nothing more satisfying than knocking the other racers around a little and watching them spin out of control.br /br /We’ve had the game for 6 months, and only play occasionally, so we’ve still got some characters cars to unlock. We’ve unlocked all the courses, though, and I’m a little disappointed at how few there are – only about 5 different ones, though you can play them forward, reverse, and partial. I’ve got them all memorized, so change of scenery would be nice.br /br /I re-read the manufacturer’s blurb at the top of the page, and some of it doesn’t sound right, unless there’s more than I’m aware of left to unlock. That bit about the saws, periscope, etc. doesn’t ring a bell, and I sure haven’t found any shortcuts yet (I’ve won every race, so I don’t think I’m missing them).br /br /Its easy in these reviews to drone on about minor shortcomings, but the bottom line is that this game is a whole lot of fun. A white knuckle ride for when you feel like something more intense than Mario Kart.

Speed Racer: The Videogame Overview

Get behind the driver’s seat with this Speed Racer based on the Wachowski Brothers film with its garage of combat-ready rides and see how you fare in “car-fu style” action. Take on the role of the characters from the film, getting behind the wheels of each character’s signature vehicles to experience firsthand the film’s high adrenaline, combative racing style. The film itself is based on the classic series created by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida. A live-action family adventure, Speed Racer follows the young racecar driver Speed in his quest for glory on and off the track in his thundering Mach 5. Choose between three different variations of the Mach 5, each one equipped with several gadgets that are unique to the car like grip tires, rotary saws, a periscope, a deflector, and auto jacks. All of the gadgets have a specific purpose. The rotary saws are used to cut down any trees that get in the way. By activating the auto jacks, the Mach 5 can jump over obstacles to discover shortcuts. Discovering the shortcuts is the key to getting the fastest times on all three tracks and mastering the Normal and Endurance modes. If you play the game well enough, you will be able to unlock new vehicles, including Racer X. Get behind the wheel and go, SPEED RACER, go!
